Situation:
A Nottingham based customer approached PPS Alfreton to help them upgrade from a fixed speed compressor to a variable speed drive (VSD) compressor. They were also struggling with the current compressor location and wanted to look at options for relocating. Having worked with PPS Alfreton at their other sites, the customer trusted the team to be able to deliver exactly what they needed.
Task:
A site survey showed the current compressor was located on the roof which made everyday maintenance and servicing very awkward – even just turning the compressor on was difficult! The PPS team discussed options with the customer and showed them examples of previous external relocations they had done. It was agreed PPS Alfreton would supply a new Atlas Copco GA18VSD+FF compressor which would be in a new enclosed lean-to structure.
Action:
PPS Alfreton facilitated the whole project, arranging and delivering the complete turnkey installation.
The customer now has a new energy-efficient compressed air system in an external compressor house that didn’t break the budget. The building has been installed with hot air ducting, inlet fan and louvres and lockable doors. The compressor was installed with external magnetic air filters and an internal thermostat-controlled heater.
Downtime for the customer was kept to an absolute minimum and only involved a short break while they broke into the existing pipework. The old, fixed speed compressor on the roof has been kept as an emergency backup.
Results:
- Space saving – the lean-to structure solved the location problem for the customer giving them a secure and easily accessed compressor house.
- Energy saving - A modern variable speed compressor can deliver potential energy savings of up to 60% compared to fixed speed equivalents.
- Service cost savings - Longer service intervals than their previous fixed speed machine.
- A reliable solution – Atlas Copco compressors are renowned for their reliability due to rigorous testing and machine innovations.
