Meet the team: Josh Cummings, from Compcon apprentice to supporting customers on full projects

Kim Martlew |

Name: Josh Cummings

Job Title: Aftermarket sales engineer

Background:
“I left 6th form in 2012 not really knowing what to do. Dave Beer (one of Compcon’s founders) is my uncle and so I started working for him over the summer. Just part time helping out on the installations side. That then led on to me working full time at Compcon and completing a mechanical and electrical engineering apprenticeship with an NVQ in fluid power systems.

“When I started at Compcon it was just a four-man outfit, so while I was mainly working on installs, there were times where I would be supporting with service and maintenance when needed.

“At the start of 2023 I took a career break for 11 months and went travelling with my partner Vikki. We both really enjoy travelling and were at a position where we were able to take the time out. From New York, we spent time in Canada before flying over the date line to Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Sri Lanka.

“When I came back to the UK, it was at a time when Dave (Beer) was retiring and there were other areas within Compcon that I could support”

Role:
“My role now is still planning installation work, but it’s also 50/50 with capital sales and service contracts. It’s a lot of after sales support and across the full product range, compressors, vacuum and nitrogen generators. I have sold quite a few VSD vac pumps recently, because of the energy savings, they can cut your energy bill by 50%”

Most rewarding part of the job:
“It’s always good when you get to rip out an old one [compressor], put in a new one and it quickly shows the customer it’s better – proves the reports and savings.

“And, as I’m from a pipe work/installation background, I do like seeing when the whole project's done and all the blue Prevost is up in the air. I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to that, seeing nice pipe work.”

When not at work you’ll find him:
“We’re always travel planning, and I really like the outdoors doing lots of walking in the Peak District, round Mam Tor, Bakewell and the Monsal Trail. A lot of nice pubs around there, we always end up at Thornbridge brewery!

“My other interests include following Derby county where I have a season ticket and also a bit of writing. Mainly scripts, comedy pieces, I’ve had a couple of bits on radio but nothing big”
