Save money and reduce wasted energy with an air compressor energy audit

Up to 80% of the total lifecycle costs of your compressor is the energy it uses not the initial purchase price or maintenance costs.

It’s crucial to fully understand and control your systems energy usage.

A PPS air compressor energy audit shows you what energy you are using and where you could save money.

  • No disruption to production
  • Clear savings calculations and ROI
  • Practical, implementable recommendations

What you get from a compressed air energy audit

At PPS we offer a comprehensive data logging service with site survey. This is non-intrusive and does not interrupt production.

With an audit, you’ll receive:

  • Clear performance data on your current set up
  • Estimated cost savings and payback periods
  • Practical, realistic recommendations you can act on
  • A simulation of any proposed changes including consumed power

Typical areas we identify savings

Common ways customers have saved money following an energy audit include:

  • Replacing a fixed speed compressor with a variable speed drive (VSD) compressor
  • Identifying over or under sized compressors
  • Pressure drop issues caused by inadequate pipework
  • Fixing air leaks to reduce air consumption
  • Incorrect system pressure adjusted
  • Heat recovery options for the waste heat generated by the compressor

Example energy audit report: How did this report benefit the customer?

This energy audit showed the customer that upgrading from two fixed speed compressors to one Atlas Copco GA11 VSDs compressor would save them almost £15,000 a year, which is 60% of their annual compressed air energy bill. This meant the payback for the installation was less than one year.

How the air compressor energy audit works (simple and no disruption)

For your free energy audit with site survey, we install data logging equipment that is non-intrusive and does not interrupt production.

From this you gain an accurate account of your plant’s compressed air demand, pressure and cycle over a seven-day period, identifying energy costs and where savings can be made. Data logging equipment can be installed on up to six compressors at any one time.

The site survey of your existing compressed air equipment allows us to offer recommendations for efficiency and reliability.

Customer examples: saving money, reducing energy, improving reliability

  • Overcoming a complex layout and saving 40% a year

Whiteghyll’s existing compressed air network was inefficient and unreliable. Their manufacturing facility, spread over three floors in a re-purposed building, had a complex layout, with each floor operating its own compressor and pipe network.

A data log and site survey showed it was possible to consolidate the compressed air system.

Going from three compressors to one slightly larger compressor would reduce their compressed air energy bill by 40%.

  • Pressure issues fixed with pipework alteration, not a new compressor

A customer was experiencing pressure issues, causing some production machines to stop, resulting in downtime and frustration. They were worried they would have to buy a bigger compressor.

The data log, which involved fitting three pressure loggers in different locations along the system, helped confirm that compressor capacity was not the issue.

The problem was occurring where inadequate pipework was causing a restriction in part of the factory.

  • Milling business saves over £135,000 a year on compressed air energy bill

Two of the milling units were powered by four fixed speed compressors that were inefficient and unreliable. Numerous issues on these compressors resulted in unplanned periods of downtime and lost production.

An energy audit with simulations showed the customer how the two milling units could run from one variable speed drive compressor.

The customer went ahead with the proposed installation. A post install verification data log showed savings of £135,961 a year on their compressed air energy bill with a payback period of just 1.5 years.

Frequently asked questions

Will this disrupt our production?

No, data logging equipment is installed without interrupting
your operations.

How long does an audit take?

We leave the data log running for one week, following this it is analysed by one of our team before a report is sent back to you.

What kind of savings can we expect?

It depends on the recommendations found for your site. If the recommendation is to upgrade from a fixed speed compressor to a variable speed drive compressor, the annual compressed air energy savings could be up to 60%. See our case study section for specific examples.

Is the audit free?

Yes, a data log and site survey is free.
