Established in 1941 as GE Simm (Surplus in Modern Machinery) Ltd, Simm Engineering Group began as a company supplying second-hand machinery and valves, conveyor belting, hydraulic mining equipment and air compressors.
Today it is known under the name of Pennine Pneumatic Services Ltd. Based in Dinnington – Sheffield, the South Yorkshire branch of the compressed air specialists helps companies to optimise their use of compressed air and reduce their carbon footprint.
Read on for a brief history of what made this branch what it is today.
Growth and acquisitions
Based in Sheffield since its inception in 1941, Simm Engineering Group made several acquisitions over the years.
Most notable for the compressor division was the purchase of Compressor Maintenance Ltd in 1979, which significantly expanded the order book with large contracts with customers such as Tetley Brewery.
In March 2015, the compressor division was acquired by Pennine Pneumatic Services (PPS), heralding a new era of expansion.
The next addition came in June 2019 when Airtight Compressor Services was acquired to become part of Simm Engineering Group. This brought together two well known Sheffield air houses, with the experienced Paul Woodhouse joining the South Yorkshire team.
The Summer of 2020 brought transformational change as the company moved to new premises in Dinnington, Sheffield. Having been at the previous Jessell Street base since 1963, Simm Engineering Group had massively outgrown the unit, and were in need of more workshop and office space for their growing team, stock and customer base.
Rebranding to Pennine Pneumatic Services Ltd
In August 2021 the name Simm Engineering Group was changed to Pennine Pneumatic Services Ltd.
Through expansion and growth of the PPS Group from two branches to four branches the time was right for the name change. This change brought greater consistency, ease of recognition across the business and standardisation for all customers over the north of the UK, without changing the service they received from the South Yorkshire branch.
